Chocolate-dipped Vega One bars are sweet and nutritious

Daiya Foods wasn’t the only local company to make a splash at the 2013 Natural Products Expo West in Anaheim, California. Last month, Burnaby’s Vega launched its line of Vega One nutrition bars at the trade show.

The Vega One nutritional shakes are known for packing lots of vitamins, minerals, protein, and fibre. According to the company, what they’ve done is take these popular plant-based dietary supplements and turn them into bars. Did I mention they’re all dipped in chocolate?

Vega One bars are vegan and gluten-free, with no added sugar, artificial flavours, colours, or sweeteners. They’re available in double chocolate, chocolate almond, and chocolate cherry.

I bought a couple of the bars for $4.19 apiece at Whole Foods Market in Vancouver and took them on a day hike in Squamish. On the way up the trail to Upper Shannon Falls in Stawamus Chief Provincial Park, I scarfed down both the double chocolate and chocolate cherry bars.

While I don’t like the taste of a few of Vega’s other bars, I enjoyed both of the Vega One bars I consumed. The chocolate coating certainly didn’t hurt.

I found these bars to be quite filling, so next time I’ll probably stop at one. Then again, it could have been the Vegan Curried Chicken Salad Roll Up, featuring Beyond Meat, that I had for lunch.
