Eat this, vegans: Pâté Pastiche

Many of us grew up eating pâté made from birds, mammals, and fish. Pâté Pastiche, however, is vegan as well as gluten-free, making use of local and organic ingredients.

We picked up the Forest Mushroom variety of this seed and grain pâte at the Vancouver Winter Farmers Market. The delightfully herby spread was devoured on crackers and a bagel by two of us in one sitting.

Its ingredients include raw hemp seeds, buckwheat, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, golden flax seeds, yellow onions, garlic, nutritional yeast, lemon juice, arrowroot, virgin olive oil, and herbs. The mushroom flavour comes from dried wild porcinis and chanterelles. Pâté Pastiche also comes in Sunshine Tomato and Market Herb flavours.

Made in East Vancouver by Pastiche Culinary Concepts, the pâté was selling for $11 a package. Two could be had for $21 and three for $30.

Held every Saturday (except December 29) outside Nat Bailey Stadium (4601 Ontario Street), the Winter Farmers Market runs until April 27, 2013. The market opens at 10 a.m. and closes at 2 p.m.

Pâté Pastiche is also available at Karmavore Vegan Shop (610 Columbia Street) in New Westminster.
