Holy tofu! There’s a new vegan blog in town.
Welcome to Veg Coast, a guide to vegan food and culture in and around Vancouver (the one in British Columbia, Canada). Stay tuned for animal-friendly, cruelty-free coverage of the tastiest bites and latest happenings. We’ll try to keep the bad puns to a minimum.
So let’s get this shiitake started. Here’s a look at nine delicious vegan options—all free of meat, fish, dairy, eggs, and honey—served at restaurants in Vancouver, in no particular order.
1. Banh mi
At least something delicious came out of French colonialism in Vietnam ($4.50).
2. Cake trio
Can’t choose between the raw cheesecake, coconut cream pie, and ganache? Get all three on one plate ($9).
3. Wild and foraged mushrooms
This heavenly dish at Vancouver’s newest and largest vegetarian restaurant will have you contemplating a fungi-based diet ($13).
4. Deep-fried sesame balls
It’s worth stopping at one order of these balls of deliciousness ($3.50), because there’s 21 other kinds of dim sum on the menu.
5. Vegan Henry burrito
Guacamole takes the place of dairy in the vegan version of this Tofurkey sausage wrap ($7 for 10 inches, $8 for 12 inches). The only downside: some of it is probably going to end up on your pants.
6. Berry Supreme smoothie
A thick blend of blueberry, strawberry, raspberry, cranberry, and blackberry, it’s berry fruity ($8).
7. Bun bi chay (vegetarian shredded pork vermicelli)
It’s one of the best lunches you’ll find on the Drive ($6.99).
8. Pan-fried turnip cake
One order of lo bak go is never enough ($2.50).
9. Crispy Chick’n burger
Sure, Loving Hut Express is a food truck, not a restaurant. It just happens to make the most flavour-packed veggie burger in the city ($8).
